Performance: Idle Loop

FreeAXP does not currently provide an Idle Loop feature to throttle back host CPU usage when the virtual hardware is idle. We have discussed the feature internally, but it is not high on our priority list.

As of FreeAXP 1.0.6.271, the Charon idle loop is supported.

I've tested FreeAXP .271 with the Stromasys IDLE V1.2 tool installed and loaded (after setting back LOAD_SYS_IMAGES from 6 to 7) and it didn't HALT the system anymore. It even reduces the CPU load on the core running FreeAXP in the Windows system.

Thank you very much for doing this. Now I can leave my virtual Alpha running all the time and not have to wait for it to boot up.

BTW, I installed IDLE V1.1 because that's the only download I could find. It seems to be working okay. Anyone know where I can get V1.2 and/or what the difference between V1.1 and V1.2 is?<hr>

There should be an IDLELOOP.VDISK file being delivered with PersonalAlpha.

The most recent version IDLE V1.2 has been released with PersonalAlpha V2.0.5 (01-FEB-2008) and supports OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 up to V8.3.

According to an ITRC thread, the IDLE package is also available from HP as HP IDLE.

However I have not been able to find a copy available for free download.
