VMS 6.2 – 7.1 Console Issue

TEST 3 (MSI01)

Install VMS 6.2 from scratch using ISO. No problems.


TEST 4 (MSI02)

- Restart FreeAXP 271 and boot pre-AUTOGEN disk image. AUTOGEN and reboot complete with no problems. Was expecting ADA errors, but they did not occur. Can log in from console.


TEST 5 (MSI02)

- Restart FreeAXP 271,

- Re-install VMS 6.2 from ISO.

- After install, but before booting the disk image to let the install complete, shutdown and restart FreeAXP 271.

- Boot disk image. AUTOGEN and reboot complete without errors.

From this testing Volker's theory that something in the state of FreeAXP is playing a roll in the problem on MSI02 looks like the correct one.

TEST 6 (MSI02)

- Restart FreeAXP 271 with TTA0 serial port included in the configuration.

- Re-install VMS 6.2. Starting to wear grooves into the ISO, but it can't be helped. The testing must go on.

- Boot installed image without shutting down emulator.

- Note that am prompted for date twice. First on boot, then on automatic reboot after AUTOGEN completes. Systems where the install completes normally do not prompt for the date the second time.

- ADA errors appear as expected. Cannot log in from console.

- TTA0: provides a login prompt. However, since I did not install a VMS license, I cannot log in. Drat!

TEST 7 (MSI02)

- Repeat TEST 6 with installation of OPENVMS-ALPHA license during install.

- Boots and AUTOGEN's without error. Can log in from both OPA0 and TTA0.

Adding the VMS license changed the behavior.<hr>

TEST 8 (MSI01)

- Restart FreeAXP 271.

- Install VMS 6.2 from scratch. Do not enter VMS license PAK during installation.

- See ADA errors and cannot log in from console after installation completes. Behavior same as TEST 1. First time a box other than MSI02 has exhibited the problem.

- ^P and boot again.

- Boot completes normally. Can log in from console.

VMS 6.2 installation on real AlphaServer 400 has no problems.
