copying files without a net... was created by dtpoirot
Howdy all,

I just a few short minutes after 'discovering' FreeAXP I had OpenVMS 8.3 installed. Simply amazing!

I have registered with DECUserve and Connect and am (now) paitently waiting for a full two week cycle to get a 'Hobbyist' license - I missed the Connect transfer by hours.

On to other things...

The thrill of installing was short lived since the network stack is waiting on the license.

Can I load packages such as GNV from a CDROM image? I can use something like CDBurnerXP to master an ISO 9660 image file...

Any ideas?

Thanks,
- dan

You can use utilities like Magic disk to make a file on the Windows host look like a CD-ROM.

VMS can mount ISO-9660 CD-ROM formats. You will want the file names to be 8.3 format.

DECUServe and Connect are two different paths to getting validated for the Hobby license keys. I do not know which ID will show up at this site first.

Yes, you can load from CD-ROM, either the real think or an ISO image. ImgBurn www.imgburn.com/ is my personal favorite for creating ISO images.

Follow-up question:

With FreeAXP is it possible to mount a CD-ROM image (not the real thing) "on the fly" or does one have to shut down the system and restart it like with PersonalAlpha?

If you use a simulated CD-ROM like Magic Disk, then you can mount CD-ROM images, but not real CD-ROMS.

Because I am running on a VM, I can use the VM management utility to change what the CD-ROM that the VM has loaded.

I would have said no, you cannot change a CD-ROM image once booted. That's a feature on our wish list. However, is sounds like malmberg may have a workaround, and a neat one at that. I take it you just assign the physical CD drive to the Magic ISO virtual drive. This looks like material for the Release Notes.
