VMware NET update 1.8.17.0 hoses FreeAXP telnet was created by lottabull

Windows Server 2012r2, FreeAXP 3.0.0.620

After Windows Update installed this innocuous-looking update, telnet into the FreeAXP system will open a window but never product a Username prompt.
Same with SSH in.

Telnet out from the FreeAXP system will never connect.

More Information: the update is to the vmxnet3 driver.

VMware NET 1.9.2.0, also for the vmxnet3 driver, released 4/28/2021, seems to work fine.
Telnet both in and out works.
