the version of freeaxp was the beta 307
I was trying to avoid an install on the host o/s but will give it a go.

Greg,
If you installed your VM with only one CPU and Windows 2003 Server, I suspect that the installation installed the uniprocessor kernel (older Windows desktop OSes did this). So, giving the VM two CPUs, then three CPUs wouldn't help if this is the case - only one CPU would be used by the kernel. See how many CPUs are shown in running the Task Manager in Windows 2003. If it shows only one CPU, even with the three CPUs you gave to the VM, then that shows you must have the uniprocessor kernel, and you will need to reinstall Windows 2003 Server in the VM to get the multiprocessor kernel that can handle more than one CPU.

Did the reinstall of windows 2003 server with the config set to 2 cpu's and freeAXP installed with no problem and then the install of alpha VMS, all went perfectly.
Another nice little windows trap to watch.
