and the conclusion is???

I am getting exactly the same error when attempting to use the RZ59

I tried the RZ29 and it installed fine.

I have yet to try a custom size or some of the other sizes.

Tested with VMS 7.3 iso and RZ59. No problem. Will run more tests as time permits.

Hiya,
Was there a problem established/fixed with this please? I'm using FreeAXP x86 v2.1.0.412 (Oct 20 2011 11:59:55) with OpenVMS Alpha v8.3 and getting a crash of the installation procedure very similar to the original poster:

This is using the RZ59 9.1GB disk. The disk was created by FreeAXP itself rather than by MIM (a MIM created disk gave similar problems, but at a different point in the installation.)

AMD Athlon II X2 240 processor, Windows XP Pro SP3, 2GB physical memory.
The CD that I was using to install VMS boots happily and was functional enough to be able to do an image backup onto a disk image on the PC's hard drive.

Sorry, I've just told a fib - it was the 9.1GB RZ1DF-CB that I was using, NOT the RZ59.<img src='../images/smiley/sad.gif' alt='smiley'>

Is this actually a bug in the AlphaServer 400 itself? The SPD that I've just looked at has a maximum disk size of 4.3GB - about right for the time that the system was available for purchase.
Is there a limitation in the hardware or firmware which means it doesn't like bigger disks?

The disk size should not be an issue. Here are a few things to try:

- If using an ISO, try installing from the CD.
- If using a CD, try installing from an ISO image.
- If possible, try the installation from a 64-bit edition of FreeAXP.

We have been unsuccessful in reproducing this problem on x86 or x64 versions of FreeAXP and Avanti, so your feedback is appreciated.

One other thing I could try is building the 8.3 installation on an x86 system exactly like you are if you can provide the answers you are using to the installation questions.
